Message from the Head of Department

Welcome to the Department of Social Work,

Social Work is a very interesting scientific and professional field, with a social and human-centered character, which aims to address complex psychosocial problems, promotes social change and development, social cohesion, empowerment, and the liberation of people.

The Department of Social Work at the University of West Attica has a longstanding tradition in the field of Social Work, and offers a modern and comprehensive Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Doctoral Programme, according to the International Standards for Social Work Education by the International Federation of Social Workers and the International Association of Schools of Social Work. The courses, provide up-to-date knowledge, methodology, appropriate skills, and practice experience to students who progress both academically and professionally.

In addition, the Department gives special emphasis to research and innovation, through its Research Centres and (inter)national collaborations, with an aim not only to inform the Curriculum according to current social needs but to develop the discipline of Social Work too.

Our graduates have appropriate and unique qualifications as well as well-established professional rights. Therefore, they are enabled to develop their career in a wide range of social services in various fields, such as child protection and family counseling, mental health, substance misuse, health, education and special education, disability, community development, social justice issues, advocacy and empowerment of socially excluded populations, immigrants – refugees and unaccompanied minors, research and analysis of social policy issues, etc.

Greek society and prospective students recognize the important contribution and the value of our Department and classify it as the most competitive among the Departments of Social Work and in general the Departments of Social Sciences of the country.

The academic community of our Department – students, staff and graduates – we are all committed to the values of social justice, human rights, the dignity of individuals and respect for diversity. We also fully encourage and support dialogue, exploration, critical thinking, respect, collaboration, and innovation in our academic environment. We learn and act together to respond both to the needs of society and the development of the science of Social Work with a commitment to the principles of excellence, professional ethics, accountability, sustainable development and social justice.
