Brief CV
Charalampos Poulopoulos is Professor of Social Work in the Addictions. He has worked as Professor (2017-2022) and Associate Professor (2013-2017) of Social Work at the Democritus University of Thrace. He was Chair of the Department of Social Work (2019-2022) and Chair of the Department of Social Administration and Political Science (2018-2019) at the same University. He was also President of the Special Interdepartmental Committee (EDE) of the Joint- Interdepartmental Master’s Degree Program “Counseling ́ Psychology and Counseling ́ in Education, Health, Work “, of Democritus University of Thrace with the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, in the period 2015-2022.
He started working in the field of drug addiction treatment in 1983 and was the Director of the Therapy Center for Dependent Individuals ( KETHEA ) from 1995 to 2013. He participated in the planning and development of the Greek Therapeutic Communities for substance abusers and in the development of prevention, early intervention and social reintegration programmes. He was also a member of the Executive Council of the National Organization Against Drugs (OKANA) from 1994 to the 2002.
Until today, he is Chairman of International Certification Reciprocity Consortium-Alcohol and Other Drugs – IC & RC for Greece, Cyprus, Bulgaria and Malta. He was also Chairman of the Scientific and Professional Advisory Committee of the World Federation of Therapeutic communities from the 2000-2014, Vice president of the European Federation of Therapeutic Communities (EFTC) and member of the Board of Directors of the International Council for Alcohol and Addictions-ICAA ). In the period 2015-2019 he was a member of the Board of Directors of the National Center for Public Administration and Local Government ( EKDDA ), as expert. Also, in the period 2018-2020 he was member of the National Council for Fostering and Adoption, of the Greek Ministry of Labour and Social Solidarity. For his overall contribution at the drug addiction treatment field, in year 2019 he received the Erick Broekaert Award from the European Federation of Therapeutic Communities.
He is the author of four books and several research papers published in scientific peer-review journals and collective volumes and he has presented his work at national and international conferences.
