Dimitra Giannou works as a social worker since 2006. From 2010 to date works in the public social services of Local Government Organizations and her experience comes primarily from the field of Child Protection. She has work experience in investigating child abuse and neglect, and in the field of foster care and adoption. She has worked with social groups which are vulnerable to social exclusion (immigrants, Roma people, LGBT people) for issues related to accessibility to their rights and services, empowerment, and actions to combat racist, homophobic/transphobic violence and discrimination. During the years of 2017 to 2019 she was a member of the Interdisciplinary Advisory Committee for the correction of registered gender of the youth, a Committee held by the Ministry of Justice, Transparency and Human Rights. One of her research activities was during 2006-2007 where she worked with the research team of Brunel University on the evaluation of a child protection program called “Option 2” which is a service funded by the Welsh Assembly that works with families in which their children are at risk of harm. “Option 2” had a particular focus on reducing the need for children to come into public care. She was also a member of the group Anti-racist, Anti-fascist Movement of Levadia and she is a member of the Social Work Action Network of Greece.
