Tracing racism in the Social Work profession: Towards the creation of a grassroots anti-racist practice.

 

The current PhD examines the problem of racism in correlation with the historiography of the profession of social work, highlighting the intersections of nationality and ethnicity with issues regarding class, race and gender. The core of this investigation comprises anti-racist social work practices which promote politically- oriented practice and struggle for social justice. The first part of the research includes a theoretical review of the connection between racism, the development of welfare state and the emergence of social work profession as well as the concurrent development of anti-racist social work. Consequently the first part includes an attempt to synthesize particular anti-racist movement milestones and their influence and interaction with social work. The research part analyzes the methodology research process that tries to respond to the research questions of investigating racism in social work practice and anti-racist practices. The second phase of the research process includes the research methodology with refugees, immigrants, members of the anti-racist movement and social workers aiming at the co-creation of a grassroots anti-racist practice.
